Life, we never fully understand things until we can look back on them in the past tense, its so funny as an eight year old boy you never realize that day your destiny is chosen for you. I always reflect back to that day my dad looking down at me telling me we are going to replace the clutch, it was a yellow 76 VW bus, the clutch slipped and I remember when we went up a hill he would say everyone lean forward. Well much has happened and much has changed since that day and seems like a lot of time has gone by but that day was just like yesterday. As a teenager I was always helping Dad with something, most of the time it was working on cars and an occasional semi truck, I literally cut my front teeth on a R model Mack when I was 13. Then the day came it was a 1969 chevelle, we found it in a pasture in North Carolina, the old man who owned it was a real life share cropper, it was stripped down to a chassis, the rear end in the trunk and the motor was completely gone, it was the beginning of my true passion for cars. We made a trade with him for it, we traded an 1971 Ford Econoline van for her, her lines were curved and flowed flawlessly just weeks later showing her true color a very distinctive racing Red we chose from a 73 corvette color chart. These are the best years of our lives a time when your accomplishments interact with your lives even tho her reactions was controlled by me she controlled me more than you could ever imagine. Her rumbling motor just made you want to race and the way she cornered made you look for an even sharper curve and a faster rate of speed. I have built several cars since then each one more sophisticated or more powerful but your first will always hold a place in your soul! Years later, after have been in the Navy and working on hundreds and hundreds of cars, I was looking to get into racing thinking that was the path I wanted to take, I found employment on gasoline alley, Kenny Brown had just opened shop there, I didn't realize how passionate he was about cars also its another one of those moments you have to reflect upon. I truly understood I was hitting the big time and it startled me we had just had John Colleti in our board room making arrangements to deliver a new SN95 to begin the platform of the then New Cobra, although today I have no idea where this car is now, some one has to be smiling really big to have it in there stable, it was defiantly one of those cars that makes it place into your soul! Well at this time life decides its gonna throw me a curve, a short traumatic change in my life, a dormant period so to speak, ive lost intrest for the time being and settle into a comfort zone just fixxing the everyday typical daily driver, a good ten years of my life intent on being normal and not remembering true passion, as simple as it sounds it wasn't so simple but still I was surviving life until fate once again opens up a new door! I was ready to get back to what I truly loved, you know the music you like when you hear it, the sounds of grinding and bending steel, the smell of burnt rubber the rumble of a 600 hp motor loping at you just asking to be unleashed! What was so striking about my life at this point was I didn't even go looking for it, it seems like it came looking for me.
Even at close to 40 you can still be naive, I was given an opportunity of a life time so I thought, but regardless I did get to rub shoulders with the some of the best builders there ever was. I was told we want you to be a third partner in all this, 21 cars 21 different colors good idea Leonard, wished it would have all worked out if only you and Jim would have been on the same page, don't worrie I don't blame you, just wished we could have built the other 20! Now that it has been out in the public others have copied the designs and ideas we have made but that's perfect, here is the reason why, no matter what we do next we have influenced others through our true passions of perfection and we have touched there souls with a little bit of our own!
Maybe a little further down the road I can reflect back on what happened, then I can truly understand!
